Satellite data monitoring system of logging and other forest disturbances that meets the needs of di
active 2 days agoThe aim of the project is to create a new monitoring system for forest disturbance based on experimental experience, involving a wide range of interdisciplinary experts, in order
– to improve the quality of work of the State Forest Services (SFS),
– promote the efficiency of forestry planning,
– develop a common disturbance monitoring system,
– develop interoperable system in the whole Baltic Sea region.
The result will be providing easy access to up-to-date satellite imagery and derived data. The results provided by the machine learning (ML) models will be applicable as a user-friendly Web application.
The solution is planned for SFS, forest owners, forest certification, insurance companies, and other stakeholders. The geographically referenced information will also be provided as a service to be integrated into entities’ GIS systems. The developed system would serve as a decision support tool, assist in logging planning also in relation to bird nesting and simplify forest management and certification procedures. Data associated with loss of tree canopy cover, such as clear-cutting and wind gusts, increased physiological stress (pests, diseases, etc.), excess flood, etc. will be served in the convenient way to the interested stakeholders.
The result of the project – a forest disturbance monitoring system will be practically tested by state forest services, private forest owners and operators, forest certification companies to increase potential value of the service and practical applicability.
