Urban (Digital) Twins
active 8 months agoHow to combine state-of-the-art data-driven solutions dedicated to smart cities available on the market in a single framework? Urban digital twin is the answer. The technology involves creating a virtual representation of physical reality and processes. It is already widely used in industry, but is also increasingly being applied to urban management processes.
For the local administration digital twins can be applied in the field of data integration and visualization. By making such platforms available to residents, decisions made locally can be more co-creative transparent. Digital twins can also find applications in response to climate change challenges or unexpected events, such as droughts, floods or emergency management and enable cities to be more resilient through “what-if” scenario simulations in a virtual environment.
Within the framework of the Interreg project, we want to create a model solution of an urban digital twin, which will be tested in selected regions of the Baltic area. The project will consist of both the part related to building a suitable technology platform in cooperation with regional technology providers and research units, but also a series of workshops aimed at municipal decision-makers so that they can learn about the potential of using digital twins. The technology transfer will take place virtually – the initial model, after feasibility studies in selected areas, will be implemented and tested, and the end result will be a set of recommendations allowing different urban centers to create their own digital twin model.
The formation of an innovative consortium to create a model digital twin to be implemented in urban and peri-urban regions of the Baltic Sea will allow the use of the local research potential, the creation of new opportunities for business cooperation, and the development of a network for knowledge exchange between local governments and the improvement of urban management processes.
