Towards the circular economy of cities in the Baltic Sea Region
active 1 month, 2 weeks agoAt present, we are dealing with the increasing negative pressure of cities and their inhabitants on the condition of the natural environment, which is manifested, among others, by more and more waste generated by residents. In the long-term perspective, the action that brings effects is shaping attitudes and behaviors as well as increasing the awareness of the society by changing the patterns of attitudes and behaviors to those that are more respectful for the environment. Thanks to the planned educational activities, it will be possible to implement the proposed solutions more effectively, contributing to proper segregation and reduction of the amount of generated waste. Understanding and social acceptance for the implementation of the basic environmental goals in the city will contribute to the improvement of the waste management system and counteracting climate change.
The most desirable way to handle waste is not to produce it. The tasks set for cities in the field of selective waste collection and the circular economy will be more effectively implemented with the participation of residents. Therefore, it is extremely important to raise the environmental awareness of residents through educational campaigns and information campaigns, trainings, workshops, etc providing information to consumers about the impact of products on the environment, solutions promoting specific behaviors.
The combination of educational activities, and on the other hand the introduction of monitoring and control measures for the selective waste collection system (especially on the multi-apartment construction areas) , will be of key importance for the efficient functioning of the waste management system in the urbanized areas of the Baltic Sea region.
The project consists in the development of a Multiannual Program of Educational and Monitoring Activities in the field of the proper functioning of the waste management system in order to raise the awareness of residents in terms of maintaining cleanliness and the functioning of the waste management system in order to protect the environment and counteract climate change.
In addition to educational activities, a pilot implementation of a system for monitoring selective waste collection (5 garbage shelters) is planned in one of the multi-apartment areas in SuwaĆki. Residents will receive individual codes that will allow them to open the container and leave hygienically segregated waste. The design of the containers will prevent unauthorized people from throwing rubbish into them. The system will be equipped with monitoring cameras that will allow the verification of people who leave waste illegally at the containers.
