Senior School for the Meaningful Old Age
active 1 month, 1 week agoAs population in Saldus region grows older year by year (36% of population is 55+ (2021 data)), seniors make up a significant part of local community. It is not only demographic, but also economic problem, common in Europe, that demands immediate solutions. Life-long learning is one of solutions for prolonging employment and rising overall quality of life for senior or so-called “third generation” citizens.
What can be done so that old age is not a passive way of spending the last years of life, but a lively and meaningful stage of life? The choice is up to each senior, but external impulses are undeniably important – to find life-long learning opportunities in their city or region. Latvia is one of the countries that lags behind in this field of activity.
More than 40 years ago, a type of training for senior citizens, called the Senior University, appeared in many European countries. Nowadays Senior University system is developed in many countries, for example, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and others. In such a learning system, not only education is important, but also other goals – to involve elderly people in an active social life, to promote strengthening of health and to prevent loneliness.
The aim of the project is to create the basis for the elderly population involvement in the life-long learning and self-improvement process by offering a specially designed non-formal education program.
