RE:DIAPER
active 8 months, 1 week agoDiaper waste is a large bulk of the residual waste in Baltic Sea countries (e.g. 130 000 tonnes in the City of Copenhagen) and it is not yet recycled. To reach the EU goals that EU Member States must recycle or prepare for reuse at least 60% of their municipal waste by 2030, this is a given fragment to target and find a recycling solution for.
To be able to send diaper waste to a recycling facility, local authorities and the public need systems facilitating sorting of diaper waste without mixing it with other fractions, and public service providers needs solutions for collecting the diaper waste and ways to separate it from the other fractions in waste management plants.
The City of Copenhagen have designed and tested a method, in both preschools and apartment complexes, to sort diaper waste. They have also worked out how to collect the fraction and ensured purity of the collected waste. Other public authorities in the Baltic Sea Region have shown interest in doing the same, but they need to perform pilots to test and refine the Danish methods to fit the sorting and collecting systems in their respective countries. With support from the City of Copenhagen, the pilot organizations will set a scheme for how to facilitate for preschools and/or the public to sort diaper waste fitting their conditions. Further, they need to find a solution for how to collect the diaper fraction using their countries infrastructure, evaluate the fractions purity (e.g. different cleaning products are used among countries when changing diapers), and how to separate it from the other fractions once it has been collected.
