Innovation Challenge: Improving the outlook of wind energy in the Baltic Sea Region
active 1 week, 2 days agoGermany’s wind energy sector, particularly in the Baltic Sea region, faces mounting challenges that threaten its role in the country’s energy transition. In the first quarter of 2025, offshore wind production dropped by 31% and onshore wind by 22%, despite the addition of 872 new turbines and 4.3 GW of capacity. These declines, driven by unfavorable weather and compounded by lengthy permitting processes, supply chain disruptions, and an aging fleet of first-wave wind projects, have forced a 10% increase in fossil fuel generation-the highest fossil share since 2018. The need for innovation is urgent: Germany aims to expand offshore wind from 9 GW in 2024 to at least 70 GW by 2045, requiring over €10 billion in annual private investment and robust solutions for grid integration, spatial planning, and infrastructure resilience.
Klimatic Group proposes an innovation challenge conducted with wind operators to source digital permitting technologies, supply chain modernization technologies, and technologies to repower aging assets to improve the outlook of the wind sector. Utilizing the Baltic Sea funding, we would manage the selection process and approval from partners to implement a proof of concept award for the winning solutions. Klimatic Group focuses on scaling engagements beyond POC, with clear milestones upon project delivery to satisfy partner needs and decrease usage of non-renewable sources during the downtimes of wind energy projects.
