Digital Villages for People
active 2 days, 18 hours agoThe aim of the Digital Villages for People (DigVIP) project is to use a digital platform to create cross-border communication and interaction opportunities for the population and local government. AI-supported translation can protect linguistic identity while breaking down language barriers.
Building on the experience gained with the Digitale Dörfer Plattform (Digital Villages platform) used in the Lower Saxony model project, the service is being further developed to offer people in border regions a low-threshold service that is easy to use even for inexperienced users and makes standard applications accessible via a common interface. Various channels of information are brought together in one place without the need to switch between different applications.
The platform is a local marketplace and collective event calenda and enables communication between citizens and the administration. It allows conversations over the garden fence to extend into the digital space.
As society changes under the influence of digitalisation, the development of sustainable, fair, innovative and resilient economies and communities throughout the Baltic Sea region must make use of the appropriate means of digitalisation. The approach of the project idea Digital Villages for People contributes to programme objective 1.1 ‘Resilient economies and communities’. The above-mentioned challenges are addressed by further developing an existing digital platform that enables communication and exchange between the populations of the Baltic Sea region countries and, at the same time, better communication between local people and their local administrative authorities. Among other things, this can facilitate and simplify administrative procedures in areas where local administrative offices are located far away. While large social media platforms enable global communication, they cannot support local interactivity in the same way.
The project aims to enable low-threshold communication with neighbouring communities across borders in selected model regions. This form of communication should be based on the shared values, culture and heritage of the population in the Baltic Sea region and pursue an approach tailored to their needs. The innovative function of AI-supported translation will even facilitate interaction and communication between people with different native languages and make cross-border administrative information – such as local road closures, hazard information, e. g. flooding or forest fire risk – more efficient.
