Boost attractiveness of bicycle highways in the BSR
active 7 months, 3 weeks agoPlanning and building of bicycle highways or long-distance bicycle connections are often big (national) projects, where many partners and municipalities are involved. Thus, these projects tend to lack some kind of creativity and innovation when it comes to providing and designing these bikeways.
Simultaneously bicycle highways can extensivley contribute to fulfilling the needs of our desired mobility transition. They play a huge role in getting people (e.g. commuters) shift from car to their bike instead.
The question that now arises is: How can planners and municipalities boost the attractiveness of bicycle highways to even get more people to leave their cars at home and to use the bike infrastructure provided? Which elements are important to address in order to fulfill the needs of the actual users?
The City of Hamburg is planning and building several bicycle highways right now, connecting Hamburg with the surrounding areas and cities. One of them goes through the district of Hamburg-North and is already in an advanced planning phase. Thats why we think it is a good time now to bundle up ideas from all over the Baltic sea region on how to implement new ideas to boost the attractiveness of our project, setting new standards for bicycle highways in Europe.
