Baltic Blue: Restoring Clean Shores
active 1 week, 3 days agoThis project idea relates to the “BSR Call for Small Scale Projects”. Our project aims to reduce beach pollution in the Baltic Sea Region by developing a practical gamification toolkit for municipalities and destination management organisations (DMOs).
Litter such as plastics or cigarette butts harms marine ecosystems, lowers visitor satisfaction and reduces quality of life for residents in coastal destinations. Although tourists are often aware of environmental issues, an “attention–behaviour gap” prevents them from acting sustainably during holidays. Local authorities and DMOs lack cost-effective and tested tools to address this gap.
The project will co-create, together with municipalities and DMOs, a set of low-threshold gamification tools (both digital and analogue, e.g. visual boards, playful challenges, small incentive systems). Activities include baseline research (surveys, interviews), collaborative design, testing in partner regions and evaluation.
The expected outcome is a transferable gamification toolkit that coastal destinations around the Baltic Sea can easily implement to motivate sustainable behaviour and effectively reduce beach litter.
