Waste treatment solutions for removal/recycling of heavy metals (contact: ivar.zekker@ut.ee)
active 3 months, 2 weeks agoWe in University of Tartu are working on topics solid waste and wastewater. Recent circular economy approaches have guided us to recover metals from raw anaerobic sludge and compost from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Recovered metals would be Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, Fe, Pt, Pd. Waste electronic equipment will also be used as a source of metal recovery. Metal recovery will be done by using fungi and iodide oxidizing bacteria. Other areas of expertise are: wastewater treatment (nitrogen and phosphorus removal and valorizing), anaerobic ammonium oxidation process and denitrifying phosphorus removal bacteria for ammonium, phosphorus removal from municipal and sidestream wastewater, microbial fuel cell technology (anammox biocathode), peat usage as building material and humic substances valorizing in peat. Assessment of waste treatment technologies efficiency has been done in several papers. The best journals where works have been published are: Science of Total Environment, Environmental Microbiology, Frontiers in Marine Science, Catalysts, Molecules, Environmental Health Perspectives.
